6/3/2022 - Early Campus Departure

To: Caltech Undergraduate Students

From: Kevin M. Gilmartin, Vice President for Student Affairs

As we reach the end of spring term, and look ahead to commencement for graduating seniors next week, Caltech faces a difficult phase in COVID-19 case activity on campus. While new undergraduate cases have fallen somewhat over the course of this week, the demand on isolation space in our on-campus housing remains a significant challenge.

To help reduce on-campus density and mitigate the potential for additional infection within the undergraduate residential communities, we are inviting students who can leave campus—whether to return home, or move on with summer travel or work plans—to do so as soon as they are able.

Faculty across all divisions have agreed that students can now complete their spring term coursework, including all final exam requirements, remotely.

Students received a communication from the Housing office earlier this afternoon regarding check-out procedures. All students who choose to depart should follow those instructions, in particular, completing the intent-to-vacate form that can be found here: https://housing.caltech.edu/undergrads/undergraduate-moving-out/form

Students who choose to check out early will be reimbursed for the days remaining on their housing contracts. It is important that students who choose to leave follow the formal check-out process, as we need to have a clear sense of those who have left, and those who remain in residence, for our surveillance testing and other health and safety protocols.

We wish all students a successful end of the term and academic year, and look forward to celebrating next week our graduating seniors, who have completed their Caltech degree under particularly trying circumstances.

If you have questions about the check-out process, please contact ughousing@caltech.edu.
