01/06/2022 - Sign up for the January 12 COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Clinic

Caltech undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, staff members, researchers, and postdoctoral scholars are invited to sign up now for Caltech's COVID-19 vaccine booster clinic on January 12. As many as 200 appointments will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Advance registration is required.

Please do not share the link with individuals external to Caltech as that will only inhibit other eligible invitees from securing an appointment. All registrants will be required to present their Caltech ID at check-in and those without appropriate identification will be turned away.

In response to guidance from the CDC and the spread of the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV2 virus, Caltech has announced that students and staff will now be required to receive a COVID-19 booster shot.With the rapid spread of the Omicron variant in Los Angeles County and at Caltech, vaccines are a more important tool than ever to help protect yourself and your community. Although COVID-19 can still infect individuals who have been vaccinated and boosted, the vaccine and booster have proven to reduce hospitalizations and deaths due to the virus.

This clinic is being administered in partnership with Vons Pharmacy. Additional clinics may be planned in the near future, depending on demand.

In accordance with updated guidelines from the state and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, booster shots are recommended for all adult members of the Caltech community who completed their mRNA vaccine series at least 6 months ago, or their Johnson & Johnson vaccine at least 2 months ago. Please note that individuals who were fully vaccinated abroad with a World Health Organization (WHO)-authorized vaccine, and who meet the time requirement, are also eligible now to receive the Pfizer/BioNTech booster. 

Vons has suggested that when those who were vaccinated abroad register for a booster appointment, they should attest that they are eligible and indicate that they would like to receive the Pfizer/BioNTech booster. When asked about past COVID-19 vaccination history, they may select the option to indicate that it has been 6 months or more since they received their Pfizer or Moderna second Vaccine Dose, choose one of those vaccines, and input the date of their last vaccine shot.

Clinic details:

  • When: Wednesday, January 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Where: The Beckman Institute courtyard (map below).
  • Vaccines: Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna booster shots will be available. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has expanded eligibility for COVID-19 booster shots to allow individuals to receive a booster of a different variety than their original vaccine. However, individuals who received a non-FDA approved vaccine series originally can only get Pfizer.
  • Eligibility: Active Caltech employees or enrolled students aged 18+ who have a Caltech ID and who received their last dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna vaccine, or a WHO-authorized vaccine, at least 6 months ago, or their Johnson & Johnson vaccine at least 2 months ago, may participate.
  • Required documents: 
    • Your Caltech ID;
    • A vaccine card or digital vaccine record that includes dates of earlier doses;
    • A photocopy of proof of health insurance; and
    • A printed consent form, which you will complete during the online registration process as described below.
  • Cost: Free 
  • Appointment Confirmations:
    • Appointment confirmations will be sent directly from Albertsons Patient Care and arrive via email or text. If you do not receive your confirmation, please check your spam folder.

Consent forms:
A completed consent form is required to receive your vaccine. A fillable consent form will appear during the online registration process only after you have: 

  • selected your appointment date and time; 
  • entered your personal information; 
  • confirmed your contact information;
  • accepted the HIPAA Notice of Privacy Practices; 
  • typed your name in the signature box; and
  • clicked ‘Continue.'

To complete the consent form, follow these steps: 

  1. Choose the arm in which you prefer to receive the vaccine.
  2. Answer the applicable Consent Form Screening Questions and Consent Form Immunization Questions.
  3. Type your name in the signature box.
  4. Click on ‘Complete Appointment.'
  5. Scroll to bottom of page and click ‘Personalized Consent Form.'
  6. Download and print the consent form and bring it and the other required documents with you on your appointment date to receive your vaccine. (If you forget your copy, printed forms will be available for you to fill out on the day of the clinic.)

All required fields in the online consent form have a red asterisk (*).

The Institute's vaccination policies require all students and employees who are eligible for a booster to receive one. All eligible students must document their booster status by January 15 or within a month of becoming eligible after that date. The deadline for the employee requirement will be shared soon.

According to the CDC, studies have shown that protection against COVID-19 may decrease over time after vaccination. Recent studies also show that a booster shot increases the immune response to the virus and should improve protection against the virus that causes COVID-19.
