Going to Campus

A Guide for the Caltech Community

Updated May 18, 2021

In consultation and accordance with local public health authorities, Caltech is implementing a slow and safe expansion of on-campus research, instruction, administrative operations, and campus life activities.

The Institute will repopulate the campus throughout the summer with the intent of transitioning all campus units to in-person operation by September 7, 2021. All on-campus activities are subject to public health conditions at the time.

In this next phase of recovery, fully vaccinated Caltech employees who have been working remotely may return to their onsite work locations, with managers approval, and subject to Human Resources' confirmation that they have submitted documentation of their vaccination with the Institute.

Individuals working on-site must continue to adhere to all local health orders and the Institute's requirements for individuals on campus, as outlined below.

Beginning June 1, the Institute is excusing from surveillance testing individuals who have submitted proof of their fully vaccinated status. All employees, students, and campus affiliates reporting to campus, even on an occasional or one-day-a-week basis, who have not submitted proof of vaccination must participate in Caltech's surveillance testing program. The program was is intended to identify asymptomatic individuals in the community who are reporting to campus to work.

Before Going to Campus

While still at home, perform a self-check for symptoms, which includes taking your temperature daily, before reporting to campus. Before starting your workday, log on to access.caltech.edu and fill out the Caltech COVID-19 Reporting application to affirm that you have received your flu immunization and have been free of COVID-19 symptoms for the preceding 14 days. If you are unable to access a computer to do so, you may request the use of a paper log from your supervisor.

Make sure to bring a face covering to wear while on campus.

While On Campus

Caltech has implemented preventative health measures to safeguard those working on campus. These include adjustments to HVAC systems where appropriate, the installation of hand sanitizer stations, and enhanced cleaning and sanitizing practices. Additional measures implemented in accordance with the city and country requirements for operation are listed in the campus reopening protocol.

When you are on campus, you will be required to:

  • Participate in surveillance testing;
  • Maintain a minimum of six feet of physical distance from others;
  • Follow one-way signage that guides traffic through campus buildings; and
  • Wear a face covering indoors. Based on updated guidance from the CDC and Los Angeles County, fully vaccinated individuals are now allowed to remove their face coverings in open, outdoor campus settings.

Keep track of where you go during the course of your day. At the end of your visit to campus, log back on to the Caltech COVID-19 Reporting application and record any indoor campus locations that you visited for 15 minutes or more.

As a reminder: it is a requirement that members of the Caltech community accessing campus fill out these daily logs. They are crucial to Caltech's ability to perform contact tracing in the event of a positive case. If you are newly returning to campus or need a refresher, view step-by-step instructions.

Instructions for outside vendors visiting campus can be found in the COVID-19 Caltech Requirements for Suppliers Coming on to Campus, which must be signed and returned to your Caltech project manager.
