Going to Campus
A Guide for the Caltech Community
Updated October 11, 2020
In consultation and accordance with local public health authorities, Caltech has resumed on-campus research activities and limited on-site administrative and support service operations. This phased return to campus has prioritized activities that are critical to the research and education enterprise.
For now and the foreseeable future, Caltech employees who can work remotely are asked to continue to do so. For individuals who have been asked to return, the following information will help guide you through the process. These guidelines and policies are aimed at mitigating the spread of disease within the Caltech community.
Before Going to Campus
Familiarize yourself with the policies and training materials. These include:
- Guide for Returning to the Workplace / Guía para Regresar al Lugar de Trabajo
- Training Video: Back to Work Safely
While still at home, perform a self-check for symptoms, which includes taking your temperature daily, before reporting to campus. Before starting your workday, log on to access.caltech.edu and fill out the Caltech COVID-19 Reporting application to affirm that you have received your flu immunization and have been free of COVID-19 symptoms for the preceding 14 days. If you are unable to access a computer to do so, you may request the use of a paper log from your supervisor.
Make sure to bring a face covering to wear while on campus. Employees should have received two of them from Caltech. If you did not, check with your supervisor to receive yours.
While On Campus
Caltech has implemented preventative health measures to safeguard those working on campus. These include adjustments to HVAC systems where appropriate, the installation of hand sanitizer stations, and enhanced cleaning and sanitizing practices. Additional measures implemented in accordance with the city and country requirements for operation are listed in the campus reopening protocol.
When you are on campus, you will be required to:
- Maintain a minimum of 6-feet of physical distance from others;
- Follow one-way signage that guides traffic through campus buildings; and
- Wear a cloth face covering indoors and outdoors
Keep track of where you go during the course of your day. At the end of your visit to campus, log back on to the Caltech COVID-19 Reporting application and record any indoor campus locations that you visited for 15 minutes or more.
As a reminder: it is a requirement that members of the Caltech community accessing campus fill out these daily logs. They are crucial to Caltech's ability to perform contact tracing in the event of a positive case. If you are newly returning to campus or need a refresher, view step-by-step instructions.
